Hypnosis: How does it Work?

While many think of hypnosis as some type of mystical state, it's simply a state of heightened relaxation and focus. Research has shown that hypnosis may be effective for reducing anxiety and stress, enhannced performance, pain management, weight loss, smoking cessation , and more. Unlike what you may have seen in stage shows, hypnosis is a natural state that we all enter multiple times per day.

For example, have you ever found yourself in a boring lecture, only to realize that your mind has been wandering off to other topics or thoughts? You're still present in the room, completely aware of what's going on, right? Your mind simply chose to take you somewhere else due to the boredom. Or how about this example: Have you ever been driving and missed an exit or arrived at your destination thinking, "How did I get here?" We call that highway hypnosis. Lastly, have you ever found yourself engrossed in a great book or movie? While it seems simple, this is a form of hypnosis as well.

So how does it work? In short, by allowing ourselves to be guided into a heightened sense of relaxation and focus, we are more open to suggestions that may help us change lifelong patterns that may be detrimental (like smoking or unhealthy eating patterns). Suggestions made in session will always come from the client's desired goals, and no hypnotist can make any client doing anything that is out of line with the client's values or beliefs.

Will I lose control?

What will it feel like?

How many sessions will I need?

As previously stated, you will be in control at all times during your session. No hypnotist can make a client do anything that is not congruent with the client's values or beliefs. Hypnosis is also not a truth serum, which means you will not tell your "deepest, darkest" secrets in session. You will maintain control at all times.
Most likely, you will simply feel very relaxed. You will be aware of everything being said, able to speak or move at all times, and free to stop the session at any time. Upon awakening, clients typically report feeling relaxed and refreshed, with a reduction in anxiety and/or stress.
The answer depends upon your personal needs. Some issues can be addressed in as few as 3 sessions. Others require a bit more time and may benefit from a combination of counseling or life coaching and hypnosis. It is important to note that hypnosis is not a magic bullet, but it often serves as an effective tool for aiding in change and healing.
