Clients are often surprised when I explain to them their experiences (for example, childhood sexual abuse), are considered traumas that may have led to PTSD. Afterall, they say, "I haven't been in a war or anything."

While that may be true, when placed under chronic stress, subjected to abuse, or faced with a life-altering event like a serious car accident or a sexual assault, many people will find themselves stuck in a pattern of feeling hypervigilant and unsafe.

For example, do you startle easily? Do certain situations/events trigger great anxiety within you (for example, being in crowds or watching certain types of movies)? Do you frequently have nightmares, flashbacks, or go over the details of past events in your mind over and over? If so, you may be dealing with some unresolved trauma.

As a trauma specialist, I've had the privilege to help countless clients work through and heal painful past events through the use of EMDR (Eye Movement Desentization Reprocessing). Research has shown that EMDR is effective in treating various types of trauma (including but not limited to childhood abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, natural disasters, accidents, etc.). Unlike traditional talk therapy, clients often begain to experience relief with EMDR in as little as 1-2 sessions.
